Reflecting Place: Designing for the Western Landscape

POLIGON Park Architecture, a leading manufacturer of open steel structures, sponsored a design competition seeking original designs for park shelters, pergolas, gazebos and outdoor structures that capture the spirit and unique landscape of the American West. Landmark Design's entry, "A Western Skyline" won the competition with a design focused on the intersection of horizontal and vertical planes that characterize the landscape of the West, and the layered history of the land, people, and culture. The structure was designed to be at home in the high mountains, amid plains and rolling expanses, along red rock river valleys, and in the towns and cities of the West. Poligon manufactured a prototype of this that was featured at several trade show and exhibit. The structure was eventually donated to Salt Lake City and installed in Hidden Hollow Park. Since then dozens of variations of the shelter have been installed at parks and recreation sites throughout the west.
